We are having a heat wave!
Edmonton is having a heat wave this week. We will see temperatures from the mid twenties to the mid thirties.
There are many vulnerable people in our care, so we thought we would post some tips to keep cool during the heat this week.
- Drink water and non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages. Stay hydrated! Coconut water contains natural sugars and electrolytes. Stay away from the sugary, gatorade type of drinks.
- Never leave any person or pet alone in a vehicle, not even with the windows open. It takes a very short amount of time for temperatures to spike (hot enough to fry eggs!) inside a vehicle.
- Keep those strenuous activities to a minimum during the heat of the day. Wait until later in the evening when it is cooler to do those outdoor chores.
- Take a dip in the new, natural Borden Park outdoor pool.
- Take frequent breaks if you are outside walking around or engaging in activities.
- Sunscreen! Sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes.
- Choose cotton clothing and bedding. Cotton is a natural, breathable material that promotes ventilation and airflow.
- If you feel overheated, take a cool shower. Help reduce your core temperature.
